Her apron strings and her purse…
‘The Purse’ tells the true story of two Wales fans, brothers David and Gareth Rees, who keep the memory of their late mother Olive alive by following Wales in the Guinness Six Nations.
Olive left her sons an inheritance on the sole condition that it was used to follow their beloved Wales, as well use her favourite Welsh Dragon purse which they were to use to hold their kitty on match days.
The advert depicts the boys’ story, from mourning their mother and in a sumptuous, moving fashion to showing them honouring her life by enjoying everything the Guinness Six Nations has to offer… They sample escargots in Paris, ride round Rome in a taxi and, of course, enjoy a great pint of the black stuff using Olive’s kitty.

Reflecting on the video, David and Gareth Rees said: “We’ve loved rugby for as long as we can remember and being able to go to the Six Nations matches thanks to our mam has been amazing. Now being able to tell our story with Guinness is a ‘pinch me’ moment.”
Niall McKee, Guinness Marketing Director said: “We are honoured to celebrate the legacy of Olive Rees in our new campaign, ‘The Purse’. Through her legacy, her sons have adopted her generous spirit to nurture a sense of friendship and community wherever they go.
The story, which ends with them scattering their mother’s ashes, has captured the imagination of fans across the country and the pair say they regard rugby as a brotherhood that crosses boundaries. What a concept! You’ve got to admit… Guinness is good.
