Less grey, more play… Dublin Canvas
Injecting colour and energy into our streets, transforming the city’s landscape and bringing the joy of art to the people… Dublin Canvas is a community art project that delivers on so many levels.
The project takes previously dull public spaces and transforms them into works of art. Showcasing the talents of people from all walks of life. Transforming the streets of Dublin into a walking gallery of public art. What an amazing idea this was by David Murtagh, Project Coordinator at Dublin Canvas…
One Irish man touched by a similar project he’d seen on his travels, brought back the niggling urge. Initially it was to bring a bit of colour to our everyday, but it’s done so much more. Launched in the summer of 2015 with fifteen boxes painted by local artists, the project was an immediate success. Since then, 350 revamped boxes dotted around the city make Dublin a more beautiful place to live, work and visit.
Over 131 artists from all walks of life have taken part in the project to date. Once you can paint, you’re eligible to participate. The brief is simple, that their creation is relevant to the area – and of course be colourful!! The pieces are playful, funny, and often quintessentially Dublin.
Closer to home, our resident artist, Veronica Dooley, made a beautiful and poignant contribution with her tribute to the Harold’s Cross greyhound stadium ‘The Dog Days are Over’.
Former colleagues are leaving their mark around the city, showcasing their talents… Željka Županić in Sandymount Village, with an uplifting piece reflecting the seafront location. And Sheila Flaherty displays her exuberant side with ‘The Danger was Half the Excitement’.
Here are some other eye-catching contributions…
I love the way this all came about… art inspiring art. Operation Transformation, of a different kind, is alive and well in Dublin’s fair city!
